Phuket Airport,
Chiang Mai Airport and
Chiang Rai Airport. Summaries
for the Pattaya, Samui, Krabi and Hua Hin Airports follow below:
Koh Samui Airport
Koh Samui
Airport is a private airport built by Bangkok Airways, which is
still the main operator and the only airline with services to Samui
within Thailand. They have near-hourly departures to/from Bangkok,
though tickets are expensive by Thai airline standards.
Advance bookings cost 2000-3500 baht, while a walk-in bookings may
be twice as much. There are also daily flights to/from Phuket, U-Tapao
(near Pattaya), and Singapore; four direct flights a week from
Chiang Mai (but no direct flights in the opposite direction); and
twice weekly flights to/from Hong Kong.
Samui is
served by Berjaya Air from Kuala Lumpur and Firefly from Penang,
both in Malaysia.
Ground
transportation from the airport is readily available. The 20-minute
ride to Chaweng in a taxi will cost about 150-300 baht. Be sure to
negotiate the rate to your destination before you get into the taxi
as many drivers refuse to use their meters.
Krabi Airport
Krabi International Airport is about 10km
from the city limits and 15km from city centre. It is 40km from Ao
Nang (the major beach area). Air Asia and Thai Airways operate daily
direct flights to/from Bangkok. Tiger Airways flies direct to/from
Singapore nearly every day of the week and to/from Darwin on Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. One-Two-Go Airlines
operates daily flights to Krabi from Bangkok (Don Muang). Krabi
Airline, a newly established airline will start its operations in
January 2008. Tentative 1st Flight Operations are from Oslo, Norway
and Munich, Germany on the 19th of January 2008, respectively.
Destination Air Shuttle, Thailand's only seaplane service also
routinely flies in and out of Krabi (Au Nangh) from Phuket and to a
numerous outer islands.
National Car Rental has a branch at the
airport and Krabi Limousine (tel. +66-75692073) has a desk inside
the terminal providing "limousine taxi" (using large air-conditioned
sedans) transport to Krabi for 500 baht; Ao Nang for 800 baht;
Phuket for 2500 baht.
Pattaya Airport
U-Tapao Airport is sometimes incorrectly
described as "Pattaya Airport" - it's actually at Sattahip, just off
the main Sattahip - Chanthaburi (Sukhumvit) highway, 30km south of
Pattaya. Primarily a military facility, it's the closest airport
fielding commercial international passenger flights, but only to and
from a handful of destinations. There are no commercial passenger
flights connecting U-Tapao directly with Suvarnabhumi or Don Muang.
Most people access Pattaya from Suvarnabhumi Airport which is on the
east side of Bangkok and quite a bit closer than Bangkok's Don Muang
Airport.
Hua Hin Airport
Only one carrier flies regularly to Hua Hin:
SGA Aero provides - at present - three return flights per day in a
12 seat Cessna Caravan. Back to pioneering days you go!
The flight from Bangkok takes about 35 minutes. As with all
airports in Thailand - request either a metered taxi - and make sure
they use it - or negotiate the service rate before getting in the
car.
